The 20-year-old pulled out of this week's Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven in the hope of overcoming the wrist injury which has ruined his year, and is still battling to prove his fitness ahead of the tournament which starts at Flushing Meadows next Monday.

If the world number 19 does compete in New York his lack of fitness and match practice will make it difficult for him to improve on last year's efforts when he reached the fourth round only to be beaten by eventual semi-finalist Nikolay Davydenko.

Roger Federer and Justine Henin, the world's top-ranked players, will be the number one seeds.
