Murray too strong for Djokovic

Andy Murray ended his Novak Djokovic hoodoo in emphatic fashion with a straight-sets victory to reach the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

The British number one, who had lost his previous four matches against Djokovic, produced an impressive display to clinch a 6-3 7-6 (7/3) success.

Murray will next play world number two Rafael Nadal, who overcame Richard Gasquet 6-7 (12/14) 6-2 6-1 in the last eight.

The two players last met in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon less than a month ago, with eventual champion Nadal easing to a 6-3 6-2 6-4 win on Centre Court.

Murray got off to the best possible start against Australian Open champion Djokovic, breaking his opponent in the second game as he raced into a 3-0 lead. The rest of the first set went with serve as Murray chased down every ball to frustrate Djokovic.

The second set began equally brightly for the Scot, who broke immediately to maintain his stranglehold on the contest, but Djokovic hit back in the next game.

At 2-2, Djokovic's forehand broke down to hand Murray another break point, which he took thanks to another error from the Serb - and Murray was just a point away from a double break in the seventh game.

But Djokovic dug his way out of trouble and immediately broke to love to level again at 4-4.

Both players had opportunities to break again but it went to a tie-break, which Murray dominated to set up a showdown with Nadal.
