Murray's fitness check

Andy Murray will see a wrist specialist on Monday before planning out the rest of his year following Great Britain's Davis Cup defeat by Poland at Liverpool's Echo Arena.

The world number three played on all three days of this weekend's tie despite the problem in his left wrist, which has troubled Murray since the Cincinnati Masters last month.

Murray said of his injury, which affects him on his favourite double-handed backhand: "The pain's bearable but I need to decide what to do next because it's such a short turnaround at the end of the year and the preparations for Australia have to be very good because of the (hot) conditions so I need to decide when I can fit in a long break."

He added: "Whether that's 14 days or longer, you just have to be careful with wrists and not keep playing when there's something wrong because the problem doesn't go away.

"There's a big tournament in London at the end of the year and I want to make sure I'm fit for that," he added in reference to the ATP World Tour finals at the O2 in November.

Murray will see the same specialist who looked after him when he hurt his right wrist two years ago.

That injury ruled the Scot out of action for three months but he does not believe the problem is similar.

"The other one was a bit of a freak thing," he continued. "It came out of nowhere and that was agony. I couldn't even hold a racquet never mind play a match.

"This one feels more like tendinitis, where it's sore and it can get better and worse."
