Murray's French hopes over - Gilbert

Andy Murray has been forced to abandon his plans to play at the French Open.

The British number one sustained a right wrist injury during his first-round match against Filippo Volandri in Hamburg on Tuesday, which he retired from in agony.

Coach Brad Gilbert has revealed Murray, 20, now has no chance of playing at Roland Garros, saying: "He's pulled the plug on the clay-court season and we're hoping he'll be back and ready to compete at Queen's in a few weeks."

The year's second grand slam tournament begins in eight days' time, but rather than compete in Paris, Murray will focus on ensuring he is in peak condition for the grass-court season.

His next tournament is due to be the Artois Championships in London, starting on June 11, a fortnight before Wimbledon.

Gilbert said on his website, www.bradgilberttennis.com: "After a couple of back injuries and now a tendon injury in his wrist, let's hope bad things only happen in threes.

"'Junior' was serving for the first set with a 5-1 lead over Filippo Volandri in Hamburg and he went to hit a high forehand and hurt his wrist."
