Nadal eager to prove class
16 January 2008
Nadal's defeat of the Frenchman was the most impressive performance of the day so far and he will next face either Gilles Simon or Rainer Schuettler.
But the 21-year-old underlined his focus was firmly on going all the way in the first Grand Slam of the year, although he admitted he will more than likely have to overcome world number one and great rival Roger Federer to do so.
"I have never won a Grand Slam outside of clay," he said.
"I'd love to win any one of them. If it's this year, all the better."
Nadal was joined in the last 32 by fellow seeds Mikhail Youzhny, Jarkko Niemenen, Ivo Karlovic and Paul-Henri Mathieu as well as impressive Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the world number 38 who knocked out British hope Andy Murray on the opening day.
But there was an early exit for eleventh seed Tommy Robredo, who was trounced by last year's quarter-finalist Mardy Fish in straight sets, as well as 26th seed Stanislaus Wawrinka, who withdrew when two sets to one down against Frenchman Marc Gicquel.
Youzhny, the number 14 seed, beat Andreas Seppi 4-6 7-5 6-3 7-6 (7/4), 24th seed Niemenen easily accounted for American Jesse Levine 6-3 7-5 7-6 (7/2), Karlovic, seeded 20, eased past Israel's Dudi Sela 6-7 (5/7) 6-4 6-3 6-1, while number 23 seed Mathieu continued a strong week for the French with a 6-7 (5/7) 6-0 6-4 6-4 win over Paul Capdeville.
