The 33-year-old fell out of favour at North End in January after publicly stating his desire to move to Fulham and subsequently had a two-month loan spell with Wigan, where he failed to make an appearance.
He was transfer-listed by manager Paul Simpson at the end of the season and the Barclays Premier League side are now interested in a permanent deal, with discussions over personal terms set to take place next week.
North End chairman Derek Shaw told his club's official website, www.pnefc.co.uk: "Carlo is currently on honeymoon but he is due back in the country at the beginning of next week and will meet with Wigan on Tuesday, so we believe."
Wigan boss Chris Hutchings on Wednesday gave a new one-year deal to 35-year-old goalkeeper Mike Pollitt, whose openings were limited last season by the form of fellow goalkeepers Chris Kirkland and John Filan.
Hutchings has already signed defenders Titus Bramble, Mario Melchiot and Andreas Granqvist, as well as striker Antoine Sibierski, having replaced Paul Jewell following the club's last day win over Sheffield United which sealed their top-flight status
