Neville: We can do it on our Owen

Phil Neville believes the return of Michael Owen and Alan Smith will provide a massive lift to England's hopes of qualifying for the Euro 2008 finals.

Owen and Smith made their international comeback after lengthy absences following serious injuries for England B against Albania at Turf Moor on Friday.

Neville told PA Sport: "Michael was fantastic all of last week with the B squad and he really looked fit and sharp. Every side needs a Michael Owen in the team. We are just glad he is back and raring to go."

Manchester United striker Smith scored the opening goal with a typically opportunist finish while Newcastle hotshot Owen looked sharp despite not getting on the score-sheet in a 3-1 success.

And in the absence of the suspended Wayne Rooney and the injured Andrew Johnson, Owen could again feature against Estonia in the Euro qualifier on June 6 - five days after meeting Brazil at Wembley this Friday.

Neville said: "He saves his goals for the big games and hopefully he is saving his goals for Brazil and the most important game which is Estonia next week.

"Michael Owen scares all kinds of defences and his record in international football is second to none, almost a goal every other game. We've also probably got the freshest footballer in the squad at the moment in Michael Owen who is just desperate to play football."

Neville, a strong contender to play at right-back in the absence of injured brother Gary and Micah Richards, knows all about Smith's qualities first hand from their time together at Old Trafford.

He said: "Alan Smith is a warrior. He loves opportunities like this one now coming up with England. He really grows when facing such challenges as this one. You saw that when he made his comeback against Roma for United in the Champions League.

"Someone like Alan doesn't shirk any responsibility and loves a fight and you need players like that in your team. We've got Michael and Alan back. It is great to have them both back. It adds competition for places upfront and it is something we've probably not had all season."
