New City deal for Johnson

Manchester City midfielder Michael Johnson has signed a new five-year contract with the club.

Johnson has earned rave reviews since breaking into the City first team two years ago.

Many Blues fans have compared the England Under-21 international's style to that of City legend Colin Bell.

Champions League qualifiers Arsenal and Liverpool are among those believed to have been monitoring the academy graduate.

However, with City on the brink of a new era on the back of an impending takeover by the Abu Dhabi-based United Group for Development and Investment, Johnson has opted to commit his future to the Eastlands outfit.

The news will be welcomed by the Blues support, who were also delighted City swiftly rejected any suggestion they would be prepared to bid for Brazilian legend Ronaldo.

Manager Mark Hughes never got involved in the high-profile courting of Ronaldinho during the summer and signing Ronaldo made even less sense.

The boss' stated aim is to bring in players who still have a desire to make an impact at the highest level, a description that would not appear to apply in Ronaldo's case.

Hughes' squad will head to Cyprus for Thursday's UEFA Cup clash against Omonia Nicosia, hoping to have Johnson available.

The 20-year-old had been an ever-present for the Blues until Saturday's defeat to Chelsea, when he was ruled out with a groin injury.
