New deal for James

England goalkeeper David James has extended his current deal with Portsmouth until the end of the 2009/10 season.

The 37-year-old has enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career this term, helping Pompey to a place in the last four of the FA Cup. His form between the posts has also helped Harry Redknapp's side establish themselves in the top half of the Barclays Premier League.

The veteran stopper told PfcTV: "It's been a tremendous week and I'm delighted to get the opportunity to sign a new contract."

He added: "I'm enjoying being at Pompey - it's a fantastic environment. I never envisaged the club being in this position when I joined."

He found himself edged out of the international reckoning during Steve McClaren's unimpressive reign but was handed an immediate recall by new coach Fabio Capello when he led the side out against Switzerland in February.

He has also enjoyed spells at Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham and Manchester City, collecting 36 England caps along the way.
