Hinds, has been playing for Derbyshire as a Kolpak player this season, despite initially seeing his registration rejected by the England and Wales Cricket Board.
Hinds, who turns 32 on Sunday, said: "I have enjoyed my first season with Derbyshire immensely and I am therefore very pleased that I have been offered the opportunity to return in 2009."
He added: "We have a talented group of players here and ambitious plans for the future. I am excited about being a part of that future."
Head of cricket John Morris added: "I am naturally delighted to have secured the services of a player with such experience and quality for at least another year.
"As well as being an exceptional cricketer, Wavell is a terrific personality to have in the changing room and his wealth of experience at the highest level has been, and will continue to be, invaluable."
Since being granted permission to play, he has hit five half-centuries - including two blistering knocks in the Twenty20 Cup - and collected 16 wickets.
The news comes after a week which has seen former captain Rikki Clarke and spinner Nayan Doshi released by the county after less than a year.
