New Zealand close in on victory

New Zealand look on course to wrap up the second Test against Bangladesh in three days as the tourists' wickets tumbled to ensure they finished day two of the second Test on 51 for five.

The hosts had reached 393 all out in their first innings earlier in the day to leave Bangladesh trailing by 250 runs - and by close they were still 199 runs behind, with New Zealand only needing five more wickets to wrap up the win.

Kyle Mills returned figures of two for 15 while Chris Martin, Jacob Oram and Ian O'Brien grabbed a wicket each. Habibul Bashar was 21 not out for Bangladesh at the close while Shakib Al Hasan was unbeaten on four.

Having resumed on 134 for three, New Zealand were chasing Bangladesh's disappointing first innings of 143 and they comfortably moved beyond that figure despite losing the wickets of Matthew Sinclair (47) and Jacob Oram (1) before lunch.

Stephen Fleming was dismissed early in the second session before Brendon McCullum fell eight short of reaching his half-century. Sinclair and Fleming had combined to add 80 runs to their overnight total before the former was dismissed when he got a thick outside edge from a Shahadat Hossain delivery and Mushfiqur Rahim made the catch.

Rahim then ensured Oram had just a short stay in the middle when he made the catch to dismiss the 29-year-old for just one run. Fleming had reached lunch on 86 and had his century in sight, however he picked up only one further run before he was dismissed when he lofted a Shakib Al Hasan delivery into the hands of Aftab Ahmed at deep mid-wicket.

McCullum steadily contributed as New Zealand continued to increase their lead but was dismissed for 42 from Shahadat Hossain's delivery with the hosts on 325. Mills was bowled out for four when he got a thin inside edge and the ball goes through off and middle stumps.

New Zealand were 390 for nine when Daniel Vettori was dismissed six shy of making his century when he scooped Aftab Ahmed's delivery back to the bowler and the hosts' innings came to an end when Ian O'Brien was bowled out by Aftab Ahmed for four.

Bangladesh were dealt a blow for the start of their second innings with Tamim Iqbal unable to open after breaking a thumb when failing to take a catch earlier in the day. And once again the tourists lost early wickets as Zunaed Siddique edged a Mills delivery to McCullum before Shahriar Nafees was dismissed to leave Bangladesh on 14 for two.

Mohammad Ashraful was caught out by Fleming at first slip and when Aftab Ahmed and Mushfiqur Rahim were dismissed within a run of each other, Bangladesh were left staring at another third day defeat on 51 for five.
