The hosts were 348 for seven at the break with Daniel Vettori on 58 unbeaten while Kyle Mills was three not out.
Having resumed on 134 for three, New Zealand were chasing Bangladesh's disappointing first innings of 143 and they comfortably moved beyond that figure despite losing the wickets of Matthew Sinclair (47) and Jacob Oram (1) before lunch.
Stephen Fleming was dismissed early in the second session before Brendon McCullum fell eight short of reaching his half-century.
Sinclair and Fleming had combined to add 80 runs to their overnight total before the former was dismissed when he got a thick outside edge from a Shahadat Hossain delivery and Mushfiqur Rahim made the catch.
Rahim then ensured Oram had just a short stay in the middle when he made the catch to dismiss the 29-year-old for just one run.
Fleming had reached lunch on 86 and had his century in sight, however he picked up only one further run before he was dismissed when he lofted a Shakib Al Hasan delivery into the hands of Aftab Ahmed at deep mid-wicket.
McCullum steadily contributed as New Zealand continued to increase their lead but was dismissed for 42 from Shahadat Hossain's delivery with the hosts on 325.
