New Zealand fail to build on fine start

Openers Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder both hit half-centuries but New Zealand wasted a promising position as they made 191 for eight in the second Twenty20 international against West Indies in Hamilton.

New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori won the toss and decided to bat first at Seddon Park and McCullum and Ryder quickly set about the West Indies attack, the former crunching successive boundaries off Lionel Baker in the first over.

After McCullum hit consecutive fours at the start of the fourth over, Ryder then belted the first maximum of the game when he leaned back and despatched Jermaine Taylor over square leg three balls later. He was then dropped by Kieron Pollard in the next over off Sulieman Benn's bowling.

New Zealand raced to 50 before they plundered 24 runs off the eighth over with McCullum clubbing Fidel Edwards for two sixes. Benn came in for more punishment the following over when Ryder helped himself to three boundaries, the best a delightful flick down to fine leg.

McCullum brought up his fifty off 28 balls with a single as the Black Caps passed 100 in the 10th over before Shawn Findlay spilled a diving chance at long-on after Ryder tried to heave Chris Gayle over the ropes.

The opener reached his half-century from 30 balls before launching Pollard over mid-wicket for six more. McCullum dished out the same treatment to Gayle before the West Indies skipper got his man, Shivnarine Chanderpaul taking a smart catch at extra cover.

Ross Taylor (6) was next to go with the score on 139 as he bludgeoned Pollard for what would have been a six had it not been for a magnificent catch on the boundary by Xavier Marshall.

Ryder went shortly afterwards for 62 when he smacked a Gayle delivery straight to Ramnaresh Sarwan at long-off and Daniel Flynn (3) was deceived by a Pollard slower ball with wicketkeeper Dinesh Ramdin taking the catch to leave New Zealand 152 for four.

Jacob Oram was run out for nine and Daniel Vettori (2) was bowled by Jermaine Taylor as the home side began to squander their fine start.

James Franklin produced a late flurry when he cracked Benn for six, four, six before one big shot too many saw him caught at long-off by Findlay. Jermaine Taylor yorked Kyle Mills (6) and Tim Southee (2) was run out for two as New Zealand finished their 20 overs on 191 for eight.
