Newcastle and Pompey in probe

Newcastle, Portsmouth and Rangers were raided on Monday morning by police as part of an investigation into alleged corruption in the game.

Officers from the City of London force carried out the operations, which were not connected with Lord Stevens's Quest inquiry into the Premier League.

A police spokeswoman also revealed "the homes of two individuals" were the subject of searches.

Newcastle say "the club itself is not the subject" of an investigation being carried out by police looking at alleged corruption in the game.

A club statement read: "If the police investigation, or the internal review by the club's owners, show the club has been the victim of criminal activity, the club will take appropriate action."

Gary Double, director of communications for Portsmouth, said: "We have co-operated fully with their (the police) search and will not be commenting further."

Glasgow giants Rangers are "extending every co-operation" with police probing alleged corruption in the game.

A spokesman for the Light Blues said: "Rangers Football Club was asked to co-operate with the investigation and have done so. We have been requested by police not to comment further."
