Nicholas named European skipper

England's Alison Nicholas has been named European Solheim Cup captain in succession to Swede Helen Alfredsson.

With six Solheim appearances under her belt, the 45-year-old was an obvious choice for the 2009 contest at Rich Harvest Farms in Illinois.

"It's a great honour and I'm delighted," said Nicholas. "I can't wait - it's fantastic."

She added: "I'm really excited and very passionate about the Solheim Cup. It's a magnificent competition and something that I always look forward to.

"I always enjoyed playing and I have enjoyed the last four events, even though I wasn't playing. It's been a very special part of my golfing career."

Karen Lunn, chairman of the Ladies' European Tour and the European Solheim Cup Committee, said: "Alison has all the credentials we were looking for in a captain and thoroughly deserves this opportunity."

The Americans have already appointed Beth Daniel as captain. She served as vice-captain to Betsy King in their victory at Halmstad in Sweden in September.
