No crisis meeting at FA

Football Association chiefs have insisted no board meeting has been scheduled to decide on national team manager Steve McClaren's future - but a former FA director is urging them to rule out any uncertainty even before England play Croatia.

Should England fail to qualify for Euro 2008 there will inevitably be discussions among FA directors about the future.

Sir Dave Richards, Premier League chairman and member of the FA's international committee, insisted, contrary to one report, no meeting has been lined up, saying: "There is no board meeting scheduled and that is absolutely categorical."

Meanwhile, David Davies, who stepped down as executive director of the FA last year, called for the FA to announce they will keep McClaren as England manager whether or not the team qualify for Euro 2008.

Hopes rest of Russia failing to beat Israel the previous Saturday and Davies said McClaren's abilities should not be judged on the outcome of a match in which England are not even playing.

Davies told PA Sport: "It's time for real leadership by the FA, and this is a great opportunity to show that leadership.

"Following their decisiveness in pressing ahead with a 2018 World Cup bid I hope the FA will act in a similarly decisive way in connection with Steve McClaren's future - whatever the outcome of the Israel game with Russia.

"Between that game and England's match with Croatia, Steve McClaren's ability as a coach will not change and I hope they will recognise that and decide whether they are going to support him or not. That is the interests of the England team as a whole. Personally, I believe they should stand by Steve."

McClaren himself said he had been pleased by the backing from the FA.

The England manager said: "I've had fantastic support from everyone in the organisation from the first day. Everyone has been fantastic behind the scenes."
