No fears for Gloucester

Gloucester boss Dean Ryan insists his team will not be burdened by memories of a crushing Twickenham defeat four years ago when they target their first Guinness Premiership title next Saturday.

In 2003 though, they topped the Premiership by 15 points and then suffered a 39-3 drubbing against Wasps as their title hopes were blown to shreds.

But the west country club secured a place in this season's play-off final through crushing Kingsholm visitors Saracens 50-9. And Ryan said: "Parallels will obviously be drawn with what happened in 2003, but this team won't carry that burden. If we carried history around with us, then we would be burdened, but we don't."

Touchdowns by Andy Hazell, Luke Narraway, Peter Richards, Christian Califano, Mark Foster and Anthony Allen, plus a penalty try and 15 points from full-back Willie Walker, ensured Gloucester's progress.

They will now meet Leicester in the fight for Premiership silverware, but on current form, Gloucester could take some stopping.

Gloucester's biggest victory of the season - it surpassed their 63-25 EDF Energy Cup victory over Bristol in early October - confirmed outstanding title credentials.

Leading only 14-6 after 45 minutes, they then amassed 36 points in 23 minutes, leaving Saracens chasing shadows at a sun-baked Kingsholm.

Ryan added: "To score 50 points is flattering. This is cup rugby, and it wouldn't have happened in the league because Saracens had to chase the game.

"But we played some great stuff. We see ourselves as a side that needs movement - we can't get caught up in a static contest - and we need to keep the game moving."
