No going back for MacLaurin

Former England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Lord MacLaurin believes the decision to suspend the tour of India was correct - and does not think the England team should return.

Although the two-Test series is still on, England's squad return home on Saturday and it is not certain when or if they will return following the terror attacks in Mumbai.

"It was absolutely the right decision to come home," said MacLaurin. "The England cricket team are very high-profile individuals. My own view is that I would be very, very surprised if the security people will give them the okay to go back."

He added: "If these fanatics are going to target people then the England cricket side could be a very big target for them.

"For myself, I don't think they should go back.

"I think it's sad for cricket but the safety of our players is absolutely paramount and I am sure that the ECB will take the same view."

Indian-born Vikram Solanki, who last played for England in last year's World Twenty20 Championship in South Africa, backed the current players' choice to take stock of the situation on home soil.

Solanki, who has played state cricket for Rajasthan and in the Indian Cricket League for the Mumbai Champs, said: "They will be the best people to judge how they feel and the atmosphere out there.

"I am sure they would have taken a lot of security advice. If that is the decision they have taken, it is the right decision.

"I have heard some of the statements which have come out from the England camp and they have been very mindful of the suffering that has gone on in Mumbai. It's devastating what has gone on."
