No regrets for Jewell
27 January 2008
Jewell called the 2-0 loss at his former club a "disgrace" and told BBC Radio Derby: "I don't regret it at all. What I said was true, 100% true.
"I'll defend the players whenever I possibly can if there is decent reason. But I'm still angry now, and it's Tuesday."
Derby offered little attacking threat at the JJB Stadium and lost for the 20th time in the Barclays Premier League this season thanks to second-half goals from Antonio Valencia and Paul Scharner.
County are currently 14 points from safety, have a cavernous goal difference of minus 44 - and relegation is a matter of when not if.
A disastrous season appeared to take an upturn when they picked up points in consecutive matches against Manchester City and Birmingham within the past month, but Jewell felt obliged to criticise his entire team after a lacklustre display.
"I'm not going to name them individually but as a group of players," he said. "We're all responsible - it was disgraceful.
"I have to stand in front of the media and justify certain things - or try to justify certain things. But I'm not going to try and justify the performance I witnessed on Saturday."
Despite the Rams' horrendous struggles, however, Dave Whelan - Jewell's former chairman at Wigan - is certain they will make a dramatic improvement under their current manager.
"He did a fantastic job for us at Wigan," Whelan told his club's official website. "It is sad to see Derby County playing as poorly as they are - but I am sure Paul will pick them up next season."
