Novak hails novel final

Australian Open finalist Novak Djokovic believes fans will get a thrilling glimpse of the future in Sunday's tournament decider.

The Serb faces surprise package Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Rod Laver Arena, after top seeds Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were both overwhelmed in the semi-finals.

It will be the first time either Federer or Nadal has failed to reach a Grand Slam final since the Melbourne Park clash between Lleyton Hewitt and Marat Safin three years ago, and Djokovic said: "It means a lot to see some new faces in the finals."

Djokovic expects a titanic battle between two youngsters who do not have "anything to lose", and the world number three believes the unexpected match-up shows the healthy state of men's tennis.

He added: "It's amazing for the sport. I think the dominance of Federer and Nadal was just amazing the last couple of years.

"So I think it's great for the media, for tennis lovers all around the world, to see something new."

Tsonga produced one of the best performances of recent times to dispatch Nadal 6-2 6-3 6-2 on Thursday, when his serve and explosive forehand were simply too much for the Spaniard to handle.

Djokovic is well aware of the task at hand but is adamant he has no reason to be afraid.

"He's just amazing athlete. He's been playing some impressive tennis in these two weeks - as I did. I still haven't lost even a set here in the Australian Open, which is amazing. It's going to be very interesting to see young players playing against each other.

"Obviously, we will not have anything to lose. We will have more motivation, even though looking at the rankings I would be the favourite. But it's a final, so anything can happen."
