Nugent in further Pompey talks
09 January 2007
The 22-year-old has been mulling over his future for several weeks after Sunderland and Pompey both had bids accepted for the England international last month.
Black Cats boss Roy Keane pulled out of the move after becoming frustrated at the amount of time Nugent was taking to make a decision.
And North End manager Paul Simpson demanded last week that Nugent returned to training on Monday if his future was not resolved.
But instead, Nugent has travelled to the south coast for further talks with Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp.
Simpson told Sky Sports News: "We had a phone call from his agent to say they were going down to Portsmouth for further talks.
"We'll see what happens, but we're at a stage now where Portsmouth and David Nugent want to know whether it's Preston North End or somewhere else for next season.
"I'm not sure I'll have money to spend (if he is sold) but the club would definitely be better off financially."
He added: "It's one of those things that's been going on for a while. But it's a massive decision for a young footballer - where he's going to be playing his football.
"He's definitely got the attitude to make it."
