Ohuruogu begins Olympic appeal

Christine Ohuruogu has begun her appeal against a lifetime Olympic ban.

The 23-year-old world 400 metres champion arrived for the Sports Dispute Resolutions Panel hearing at Ely Place Chambers off London's Chancery Lane well ahead of the scheduled 10am start.

Ohuruogu, banned for life from the Olympics by the British Olympic Association after missing three out-of-competition drugs tests in 2005 and 2006, is hoping to have the decision overturned at a hearing expected to last for several hours.

The decision will not be announced until next month.

The London runner's appeal is being supported by UK Athletics who view Ohuruogu - who returned from their 12-month ban to strike gold at the World Championships in Japan less than a month after completing the suspension - as one of Britain's leading medal hopes for next year's Beijing Olympics and the 2012 Games in London.

A good omen for Ohuruogu is that the only other two British competitors to have missed three tests - world triathlon champion Tim Don and judo's Peter Cousins - were cleared by the SDRP.

Monday's three-man panel is being chaired by Nicholas Stewart QC, who also headed the hearing which cleared Don to compete at the Olympics.
