Old Firm clash postponed again
13 January 2008
A waterlogged pitch at Ibrox meant the fourth-round tie has had to be put back to January 23 - the date pencilled in for the Clydesdale Bank Premier League derby at Celtic Park.
No new date has been set for the Old Firm fixture, which was originally put back from January 2 following the death of Motherwell captain Phil O'Donnell.
The postponement of Sunday's cup tie adds further to the fixture backlog affecting Rangers.
Their only free midweek before March is the first full week of February, which is set aside for international commitments.
The rain claimed Rangers' SPL clash at St Mirren last Tuesday, which had already been put off to help Scotland prepare for their Euro 2008 clash with Italy in November. The Love Street match is also still to be re-scheduled, and the SPL may have to wait until Rangers' European commitments become clearer.
The Gers face Panathinaikos at home and away next month in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup, and victory over the Greeks would set up two more European games in the first fortnight of March.
Scotland are likely to have a friendly on March 26, three days before the Old Firm derby at Ibrox, ruling out another midweek possibility. The league splits after April 5, when Rangers face Dundee United at Tannadice, leaving few opportunities for the outstanding games to be played.
Rangers will face Gretna at Fir Park on Wednesday in another rearranged SPL match.
Manager Walter Smith succeeded in a bid to postpone that game in December to prevent his side picking up injuries before their Champions League group decider against Lyon, which they lost 3-0.
