O'Neill out of England running

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has ruled himself out of the running to become the new England manager.

The former Celtic boss was the bookmakers' favourite to take the post after Steve McClaren was sacked on Thursday in the wake of Wednesday's Wembley defeat by Croatia, which meant England failed to qualify for Euro 2008. However, O'Neill - who was also in the running when McClaren got the job after the 2006 World Cup - has decided he will not throw his hat into the ring.

He told the club's official website: "I want to do this job. I've started it and I want to drive it forward. This is what I want to do. We're nowhere near completed at all. In fact, we're just starting and I want to complete this job."

O'Neill added: "I know where the speculation has arisen from because I was involved in the interview process the last time,

"I was not a club manager at the time, and if that opportunity had arisen and I had been given that chance, that would have been a different matter.

"But I am here now and I'm committed to Aston Villa Football Club. This is what I want to do."
