Opening duo move towards victory

Openers Michael Lumb and Jimmy Adams moved Hampshire to within sight of victory in the Friends Provident Trophy final after Dominic Cork had earlier helped them take control at Lord's.

With 220 needed for victory, left-handed pair Lumb and Adams shared a 93-run partnership in their reply, with the only chances for Sussex due to ambitious running between the wickets.

When Adams departed leg before wicket, for 55, it was to a Luke Wright ball that pitched outside leg stump, leaving Hampshire 93 for one.

Mike Yardy had earlier given Sussex some hope with 92 not out but veteran Dominic Cork had already inflicted the damage.

Cork rolled back the years to take three early wickets - including Ed Joyce and England wicketkeeper Matt Prior - before taking a fourth later in the showpiece.

Yardy's response was to move himself up the order and scored the bulk of the runs in Sussex's total of 219 for nine in their 50 overs.

It was a reminder of three years ago when Yardy was the joint top scorer in the final against Lancashire, with Sussex fighting back to eventually win the trophy.

Yardy's half century at least gave Sussex hope and he was well supported by Rory Hamilton-Brown (32) before he was dismissed by Imran Tahir.
