O'Sullivan secures win with maximum

Ronnie O'Sullivan fired a brilliant 147 maximum break to book his place in the quarter-finals of the 888.com World Snooker Championship in Sheffield.

O'Sullivan punched the air in delight after completing the stunning clearance to seal a 13-7 victory over Mark Williams.

It was only the seventh maximum at the venue - O'Sullivan has now made three of them - and earns the 'Rocket' a bonus of £147,000 as well as £10,000 for the highest break.

O'Sullivan told BBC2 afterwards: "It was more important to win the game but it gives me a few more choices in the summer. I'll be getting a Bentley GT Convertible now - I've been dying for one."

O'Sullivan will now face China's Liang Wenbo after he held his nerve to win an extraordinary last-frame thriller against Northern Ireland's Joe Swail.

Liang, who led 12-8 at one stage, finally came through 13-12 to set up a last-eight clash with O'Sullivan on his Crucible debut.

Scotland's Stephen Maguire secured his place in the last eight with a 13-7 victory over Australia's Neil Robertson.

Maguire won the opening session of the match 9-0 and could have ended it with a session to spare on Sunday night, but Robertson kept his hopes of a record comeback alive and trailed 11-5 going into Monday afternoon's play.

The Melbourne left-hander then won the first two to get within four frames, but Maguire held his nerve with breaks of 100 and 56 to seal victory and a quarter-final with Joe Perry.

Perry took a 9-7 lead into the final session but twice saw his advantage cut to a single frame by a determined Stuart Bingham, who knocked six-time champion Steve Davis out in the first round. However, Perry won three frames in a row, aided by breaks of 69 and 55, to seal a 13-9 victory.
