Owen vows to be back for England

Michael Owen insists he "fully understands" why he played no part in Fabio Capello's first match in charge of England.

The Newcastle striker, who has enjoyed being virtually an automatic selection for the majority of his international career, was an unused substitute in Wednesday's Wembley friendly against Switzerland.

"Fabio Capello's first England team was picked on in-form players and I fully understand why I was left out," Owen wrote in the News of the World.

He added: "Four months with one goal mainly because of injury has not given me the opportunities to show the new manager what I can do."

Owen's absence raised doubts over his England future but the 28-year-old has vowed to prove the critics wrong.

He said: "I get left on the subs' bench and the debate is: is this the beginning of the end of Owen's international career?

"I have proved them (the doubters) wrong time and again - not with words but with my performances out on the pitch.

"And I am certain I will do so this time as well."
