Pakistan suffer early loss

Spinner Ajantha Mendis claimed the wicket of opener Khurram Manzoor as Pakistan suffered an early blow on day three of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Karachi.

Manzoor and captain Younus Khan had made steady progress in the first hour of the day, but Mendis broke the partnership in his first over by snaring the former for 27.

Younus continued to resolutely hold up one end and was on 46 as Pakistan reached 123 for two at lunch. Former captain Shoaib Malik was keeping Younus company at the crease and was batting on 19 with Pakistan still 521 runs behind Sri Lanka's first innings total of 644 for seven declared.

Manzoor had looked comfortable against fast bowlers Chaminda Vaas and Dilhara Fernando, but struggled when off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan was pressed into attack.

He almost presented Murali with a second wicket when he went back to defend a wickedly-turning delivery, but got just enough bat on it to edge it past the keeper.

A change in ball forced Murali out of the attack, but Mendis struck on his introduction in the 12th over of the day.

Manzoor went back to defend a delivery, but the ball spun away clipping the outside edge which Prasanna Jayawardene neatly gloved.

At the other end, Younus had adopted a safety first approach and was content to put away the bad ball.

Malik, started briskly, getting off the mark with a boundary of Fernando and hitting the bowler for two more in his next two overs before settling down to offer strong support to Younus.
