Parlour: Work the key for Adebayor

Ray Parlour has warned Emmanuel Adebayor he will have to work hard to regain the respect of the Arsenal fans, but is sure it will only be a matter of time before they will be singing the striker's name again.

Adebayor bagged 24 league goals in his first full season with the Gunners last year, helping his team finish third in the Barclays Premier League, but annoyed fans by doing little to quash rumours of a possible move to Barcelona over the summer.

And former Arsenal star Parlour said: "It's a big plus point that Adebayor has decided to stay at the club. He's a big player for us so I'm pleased he's committed himself to the club."

"He worked his socks off against Real Madrid (pre-season) but he's got to do that every game now," he told PA Sport. "The fans have to see that he's got the desire and wants to play in an Arsenal shirt.

"I'm sure if he works hard and scores a few goals the fans will be singing his name again."

Adebayor's excellent form early last season earned him many plaudits, and eased Gunners' fans worries about the departure of Thierry Henry - who had been sold to Barcelona for £16million.

His form did not go unnoticed by the top teams across Europe and the Togo international striker was soon linked with a move to join Henry in Spain.

But the transfer saga finally came to an end last Friday when Adebayor signed a new four-year deal with Arsenal. He then went on to kiss the club badge after scoring the winning goal in the club's 1-0 pre-season win over Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Parlour thinks manager Arsene Wenger needs one more player to ensure that the Gunners are in a position to challenge Manchester United for their title.

"They've lost some key players with (Mathieu) Flamini, (Alexander) Hleb and Gilberto going," he said. "But if he (Wenger) can get one more holding midfield player then it could a be a good season."
