Paterson needs drip for infection

Chris Paterson has been put on a drip to help his recovery from a foot infection ahead of Scotland's first autumn Test against Fiji.

The Edinburgh full-back sat out his team's 9-8 home defeat by Magners League rivals Newport Gwent Dragons on Sunday night.

"He was on a drip in hospital on Thursday, Friday and Saturday - not overnight, just in each day to get antibiotics into his system, because his foot was a mess," said Edinburgh head coach Rob Moffat. "They say you should just get five courses, and he's had four. But it is better."

He added: "It's probably good for him that there's nothing for a week.

"He'll need that time to get back into training. It is his right foot, which doesn't help."

Scotland head coach Andy Robinson added Edinburgh prop Kyle Traynor to his squad on Sunday evening for the three-day training camp in St Andrews as Gloucester's Alasdair Dickinson continues to struggle with a shoulder problem.

But two more Edinburgh players are a cause for concern in the build-up to the Murrayfield clash against Fiji on November 14.

Alan MacDonald missed the Dragons defeat with a calf problem, while centre Ben Cairns was taken off with a knee injury.
