Pattinson strikes but England toil

Pattinson won an lbw decision against Hashim Amla - but South Africa otherwise moved with power to add from 101 for three to 158 for four, by lunch in bright and breezy conditions in the second Test.
There was little obvious help for England's four-strong seam attack, with minimal swing available to them and nothing notable in terms of sideways movement or unpredictable bounce on a slow pitch.
Amla and his fourth-wicket partner Ashwell Prince were in no hurry in this well-progressed contest but nonetheless consolidated their team's already favourable position, after bowling England out for only 203 on Friday.
For Pattinson, though - and the England selectors - there was at least that moment of vindication for his surprise elevation to the Test ranks, after just 11 first-class games and around two weeks before his 30th birthday.
The Grimsby-born, Australian-raised seamer arguably had luck on his side when Daryl Harper raised his finger after Amla missed a slower-ball, low full toss and was hit in line with leg-stump by a delivery which would probably have swung to safety.
England, of course, thought they had Amla on nine - before controversy kicked in and Michael Vaughan's 'catch' at mid-off was disallowed.
Instead the number three stayed to share a 67-run stand with Prince, and there must have been some frustration among bowlers and fielders as Amla began to time the ball sweetly for boundaries square on either side of the wicket.
Vaughan had opened up with Andrew Flintoff and James Anderson this morning, and summoned Stuart Broad as his first change before allowing Pattinson his first opportunity - in the 38th over of the innings - to try again down the hill after his new-ball spell of 3-0-16-0 from the Kirkstall Lane end.
Prince's new partner was AB de Villiers, who was unbeaten at the break.
