Paul pondering next step
20 January 2007
The 31-year-old New Zealander, one of a handful of players to have appeared in all 12 seasons of Super League, is out of contract at the end of the season and admits "everything is up in the air".
"At the moment, we're continuing with talks," he said. "The reality is the season may finish next week or it may finish in four weeks' time. There are still a few months left for negotiations and looking at options so we're just keeping everything open."
Paul spent 10 fabulous seasons at Bradford, where he still enjoys hero status, and has enjoyed a new lease of life at Huddersfield over the last two years.
He helped the Giants reach the Challenge Cup final for the first time for 44 years last year and has played a key role in their successful bid to make the Super League play-offs for the first time.
Paul, who has started to carve out a promising career in the media, admits he has little left to achieve as a player but feels he is not yet ready to retire.
Brother Henry, two years his senior, recently signed a new contract with Harlequins and Robbie is unlikely to be short of other suitors if he fails to agree a new deal with Huddersfield.
"I feel I have reached a time in my career where, if I wanted to retire, I have achieved a lot but I still know that I'm physically hungry for more of this stupid sport that we love," he said.
"What do we love about it? You go out there to get smashed and bashed about every week. But there is something that draws us towards it.
"I can pretty confidently say that at this point in time, I'm not quite ready to hang up the boots but, if opportunities arise that outweigh certain circumstances, then maybe I will consider it. But right now all I can say is everything is just up in the air."
