Pavey claims final berth

Pavey, who won silver over 5,000m at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, has decided to make the 10,000m her priority this year and finished an agonising fourth in last Saturday's final following another gutsy display from the Exeter Harrier.
But the 33-year-old bounced back to post a season's best 15 minutes, 11.83 seconds, the ninth fastest on the timesheet at the Nagai Stadium this evening.
Pavey stuck with the leading pack throughout the race and led at the bell, but as the leading three kicked for home she dropped back before securing a comfortable fourth.
"It felt harder that it should, but obviously I would normally do the 5K fresh and my calves were actually hurting, they were not injured but I haven't had the chance to test them out and that was worrying," said Pavey.
"The impact was painful. When I did the 10K they didn't hurt at all, so going into it with damaged legs is not ideal.
"But I enjoyed it and I didn't not want to turn down the chance to compete in the World Championships so I really wanted to give it a go and enjoy it.
"I will try the best I can to recover for the final, but I think it could be harder than normal to recover with having damage on top of damage."
Joice Maduka struggled to live with the pace set by defending world champion Allyson Felix and failed to secure a place in Thursday's 200m final after finishing sixth in her heat in a time of 23.62secs - 0.3secs slower than her morning heat.
"In a word it was awful," said Maduka. "I tensed up trying too hard and did not stay relaxed. I got off OK, but it was the running off the bend that cost me. I am tons better than that and perhaps I tried to hard, but I'm bitterly disappointed."
