Pearce: Don't judge Theo on goals

Walcott's strike against Republic of Ireland secured a 3-0 win and virtually assured Pearce's youngsters a play-off to reach the 2009 European Championships in Sweden.
"People probably expect too much from him but I think he's developing nicely," Pearce said. "He's working for a fantastic club manager in Arsene Wenger at a fantastic football club. We're pleased he scored but that is not the be-all and end-all."
Walcott's strike took his Under-21 tally to five goals, one more than he has managed for Arsenal since moving from Southampton two years ago.
Although he has not yet made a significant impact under Arsene Wenger, Pearce is pleased with the progress of the 18-year-old forward.
"Theo will be judged by me and his club on how he does over 90 minutes," Pearce added. "He's the second youngest in my team and was probably the second youngest on the pitch.
"I played him in a difficult position, up front on your own is always difficult - it's a fantastic part of his education and we know he has the ability to score goals.
"He's started every match for me so far this campaign, at Arsenal he's getting more and more starts so he has to be patient and keep learning the game as he ticks along.
"The price tag has catapulted him into the limelight and the World Cup has as well. He's still a very young man who is still learning his trade."
