Pears sign Razzaq

Worcestershire have confirmed the signing of Abdul Razzaq - hours after he announced his retirement from international cricket.

The 27-year-old, who quit in protest at his omission from Pakistan's squad for the ICC World Twenty20, joins the county as a replacement overseas player for the remainder of the season.

His capture follows the return of Phil Jaques and Doug Bollinger to Australia for their A-team tour of Pakistan.

Pears chief executive Mark Newton said: "It has been very difficult to find quality replacement overseas players because of the forthcoming World Twenty20, and Abdul's availability has come at just the right time.

"He has scored over 6,500 runs and taken nearly 350 wickets at international level and will certainly give us the quality and experience we need during the last few weeks of the season, particularly in the NatWest Pro40 competition.

"We have received clearance from the Pakistan Cricket Board but still need to complete the registration procedures with the ECB."

Razzaq, along with prolific batsman Mohammad Yousuf, was omitted from Pakistan's 15-man party earlier this month for the inaugural event in South Africa.

Speaking to local television channel Geo News, he cited the PCB's "attitude" for his decision.

"They dropped me from the World Twenty20 squad and I was very upset and disappointed," he said. "But none of them bothered to call me up and tell me why I was dropped.

"Their attitude has hurt and disappointed me a lot, which is why I have decided to retire from international cricket."
