Pendleton out of keirin

Victoria Pendleton's bid to regain the women's keirin title - and to follow up Saturday night's sprint victory - was ended in the second round at the Track Cycling World Championships on Sunday.

Pendleton, who won keirin gold in Majorca in 2007 and was chasing a fourth medal in Pruszkow, Poland, was eliminated by a fourth-placed finish in the second round behind France's Clara Sanchez.

Jessica Varnish was earlier edged out after finishing fourth in her first-round repechage contest.

Pendleton completed her collection of a full set of medals from the BGZ Arena with a successful defence of her women's sprint title on Saturday.

It was the 28-year-old's fourth sprint world title in five years and an achievement she described as a career high, following on from her Olympic success in Beijing.

Pendleton, who won 500-metres time-trial bronze on day one and team sprint silver alongside Shanaze Reade on day two, won keirin silver in Manchester last year behind Jennie Reed of the United States.

But the Briton appeared lethargic following her emotional sprint success and finished fifth in her first round heat.

Pendleton, from Stotfold, Bedfordshire, responded when offered a second chance by finishing first to progress to the second round.

But a gruelling programme of four events was taking its toll and she could not find the energy to advance to the final.

Pendleton completed her World Championship campaign with fifth place in the race off to finish 11th overall.
