Penny picked up by GB

Warrington flier Kevin Penny's remarkable first season in Super League got even better when he was named in the initial Great Britain train-on squad.

The 19-year-old winger, who gave up a promising basketball career for rugby league, was named in the Super League Dream Team on Monday after making just 12 full appearances for the Wolves.

And now he is among 11 players chosen by Great Britain coach Tony Smith from clubs eliminated from the Super League play-offs to prepare for the Gillette Fusion Test series against New Zealand, which starts next month.

He is joined by his Warrington team-mates Martin Gleeson, Adrian Morley, who captained Britain against France in the summer, Jon Clarke and Ben Westwood.

Surprise selections were those of Wakefield full-back Matt Blaymire and prop Richard Moore, who were both playing National League rugby for York last year but played key roles in the Wildcats' successful season.

Others selected today were the Salford pair of Andy Coley and David Hodgson, Wakefield stand-off Jamie Rooney and Harlequins' Bradford-bound centre Paul Sykes.

Penny, Blaymire, Moore and Rooney are uncapped while Sykes and Coley made their Test debuts in the 42-14 win over France in June.

They will attend regular sessions under the guidance of conditioner Steve Hampson as part of preparation for the meetings with the Kiwis.

More players will be added as their clubs are eliminated from the play-offs and the final squad will be named after the Grand Final on October 13.
