Prior broke his thumb in practice on Monday at the ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa and with the one-day tour party set to arrive on the sub-continent in a week's time there is no time for him to recover.

"Phil has been in outstanding form for his county this season, has experience of opening the innings in domestic one-day cricket, and this is an excellent opportunity for him to test himself at a higher level," said chairman of selectors David Graveney.

England are due to play a warm-up match against Tamil Union in Colombo on September 28 before embarking on five-match one-day series, ahead of three Test matches.

Mustard, 24, has been rewarded for an impressive season in which he has scored 893 runs in domestic one-day cricket at an average of 49.61.
