Phillips strike sinks Rangers

Birmingham moved to the top of the Coca-Cola Championship, for a couple of hours at least, with a narrow victory over fellow pre-season promotion favourites QPR.

Kevin Phillips grabbed his fourth goal of the season in first-half injury time to settle an uneventful encounter that failed to really spark into life.

The veteran striker tapped home from close range after good work from Garry O'Connor down the left to give Blues an impressive 23 points from their opening 10 games and leave the Rs winless in four league games.

QPR failed to really get going and, despite having a wealth of possession, did not force Blues keeper Maik Taylor into any save of note.
