Pietersen century helps England recover

Kevin Pietersen struck his 12th Test match hundred to dig England out of a hole against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

Pietersen forged an impressive sixth-wicket alliance with Tim Ambrose at his former county headquarters to address a situation of 86 for five shortly after lunch.

He reached three figures with a cover-driven four off Chris Martin midway through the evening session and Ambrose passed 50 - for the third time in half-a-dozen Tests - as England recovered to 228 for five.

It was the first time Pietersen has made a half-century in this series, but others struggling for runs continued their poor trot in a manic spell after the lunch interval.

Paul Collingwood was among a trio of dismissals for two runs in the space of just three overs.

Collingwood, who has only 63 runs in all cricket this summer, did not add to the tally as Kyle Mills enticed a thick edge to slip.

The treble was somewhat self-inflicted, however, as Andrew Strauss undid all his hard work by reaching for a wide ball from Kyle Mills and redirecting it to Ross Taylor at slip.

Strauss' departure for 37 was followed by Ian Bell, who was trapped leg before wicket playing around a delivery from the disciplined Iain O'Brien.

Captain Michael Vaughan was one of two early morning wickets - prised out by O'Brien as the New Zealanders took advantage of considerable swing and seam movement.

Vaughan, who struck a fine hundred in defeat to India here last year, took three fours off Chris Martin to signal his liking for the ground, but a drive at O'Brien, Martin's replacement at the Radcliffe Road end, resulted in his off stump being knocked back.
