Pietersen puts England in control

Kevin Pietersen raced to his sixth one-day international century to propel England to a commanding total in Sunday's opening match of the NatWest Series against New Zealand.

Put into bat at Chester-le-Street, Pietersen's brilliant 110 off 112 balls helped England overcome the loss of two quick wickets mid-way through their innings to reach a daunting 307 for five in their 50 overs.

Ian Bell picked up where he left off from his man-of-the-match performance in Friday's Twenty20 International triumph by dominating a 49-run opening stand with Luke Wright.

Sussex all-rounder Wright struggled to match Bell's fluency before driving to mid-off for 11 and the Warwickshire batsman, promoted to opener after Alastair Cook was again ruled out with a shoulder problem, fell to a run-out mix-up.

Bell was fortunate to survive the first ball of the innings when he edged Kyle Mills behind only to be given a reprieve when it was ruled a no-ball for over-stepping.

But he overcame that shaky start to hit five fours and a six in his 46 off 58 balls before being run out from short mid-wicket by Ross Taylor attempting a quick single.

His demise set the stage for Pietersen and captain Paul Collingwood to forge a brilliant 136-run partnership off only 122 balls and propel England towards their weighty total.

Collingwood, desperately short of runs in the Test arena, contributed an impressive 64 off 64 balls before chopping New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori onto his stumps.

But Pietersen made no such mistakes and hit eight fours and three sixes, including reverse sweeping two over the ropes, while Owais Shah pushed England past the 300 barrier with a quick-fire 49 off only 25 balls to help add 73 off 35 balls.
