Pompey to let Harry follow his heart

Portsmouth will allow manager Harry Redknapp to leave for Newcastle if he tells the south-coast club that is what he truly wants to do.

Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie, who drove Redknapp away from the media circus which had gathered outside the club's training ground on Friday following fast-developing speculation of his departure to the north-east, could not have made it more clear.

Storrie, also Redknapp's confidante at their former club West Ham, insisted: "Harry is our manager. In my opinion he's the best in the country. Harry is the way we see things going forward here."

But he also admitted: "If Harry comes to us and says he really, really wants to leave Portsmouth Football Club then that is a different scenario."

Reports suggest Newcastle, who parted company with Sam Allardyce on Tuesday, are ready to offer Redknapp a four-year deal worth £20 million to take over.

They would also, apparently, throw in the use of super-rich owner Mike Ashley's private plane so that he could commute between his luxury home in Poole and St James' Park.

It is believed that Redknapp still has to persuade wife Sandra that this a viable option - even if he makes the biggest decision of his managerial career and turns from crafty cockney to honorary Geordie.

Storrie added: "It's the sort of thing which, quite frankly, gets you a little bit angry .

"It is obvious Harry is going to be linked with other jobs. Several months ago he was linked with Tottenham. Then he was linked to England - and now he is linked to this (Newcastle) job. That is three big posts.

"It just shows you what a fantastic guy we've got in Harry. But we have had no approaches whatsoever, and I'm not so sure we ever will."
