Ponting puts Australia in charge

A century from captain Ricky Ponting, his first in India, helped Australia assume command on the first day of the first Test.

Ponting, adjudged leg before to Harbhajan Singh late in the day, hit 123 as Australia, who had chosen to bat first after winning a good toss, closed the day on 254 for four.

Michael Hussey was four runs short of a half-century when stumps were drawn for the day, with Michael Clarke falling victim to Zaheer Khan in the last over.

Zaheer, who took the wicket of Matthew Hayden (0) in the day's first over, struck again with the second new ball to remove Clarke for 11.

Simon Katich (66) had earlier shared a 166-run partnership with Ponting before he became Ishant Sharma's first scalp.
