Ponting sets India challenging target

Ricky Pointing issued a statement of intent on the final day of the first Test in Bangalore as Australia declared on 228 for six to set India a victory target of 299.

Resuming on 193 for five, the tourists survived a scare when Anil Kumble dropped a caught and bowled chance off Brad Haddin from the first ball of the day.

But India recovered and Ishant Sharma bowled Shane Watson in the second over for 41.

Haddin finished unbeaten on 35 and Cameron White was not out 18 when captain Ponting called an early halt to the innings in a bid to force a result in the opening match of the series.
