The little scrum-half coolly stepped into the shoes of broken-jaw victim Sean Long to create tries for Ade Gardner, Lee Gilmour and Paul Wellens before scoring the match-clincher himself to dash Warrington's hopes of a first derby win for eight years.
"It was a good test for him and he was good," said Potter. "There is a lot of water to go under the bridge before next year and we'll see how he progresses but I'm happy with what I've seen."
He added: "He was probably a little slow out of the blocks but he worked his way into the game really well. He controlled the team and looked lively. He was involved in a few big plays."
Saints trailed 24-18 after 50 minutes but finished the game strongly with England prop James Graham scoring the second of his two tries to secure the win that keeps them two points ahead of Leeds.
"It was a tough match," added Potter. "A few little things didn't go our way but our reaction to that bit of adversity was fantastic."
St Helens lost Maurie Fa'asavalu with an arm injury and are to send him for x-rays to determine if there is a break while full-back Paul Wellens finished the game wearing a bandage around his face to stop a bleeding nose.
