Potter enjoys Saints march

St Helens coach Mick Potter hailed his side's best performance of the season after they ended the 100% Super League record of champions Leeds in a feisty Grand Final rematch at the GPW Recruitment Stadium.

Centre Matt Gidley scored a brace of tries as Saints pulled off a 26-18 win to draw level with the Rhinos and whet the appetite for their Challenge Cup meeting in a fortnight's time.

"I would say it's our best performance," said Potter. "This will boost our confidence. It was a good game for the fans to watch. I certainly enjoyed it and I enjoyed the two points."

He added: "I thought our attack was good. We did what we practised this week."

Saints fifth victory came at a price with scrum-half Sean Long (quad), prop Maurie Fa'asavalu (jaw) and hooker James Roby (rib) nursing injuries.

Fa'asavalu was laid out in a tackle by Leeds front rower Ryan Bailey but is expected to be fit for next week's game at Wakefield.

"He was knocked out so he couldn't go back but his jaw is okay," said Potter. "I didn't have a clear view of it but there was obviously contact to the head."

Leeds also lost their scrum-half, Rob Burrow, to a second bout of concussion this season but he was able to go back on for the last 25 minutes.

Veteran centre Keith Senior grabbed two tries to emulate St Helens hooker Keiron Cunningham in scoring in all 14 seasons of Super League and skipper Kevin Sinfield's third touchline conversion in injury-time enabled the Rhinos to stay top of the table on points difference.

"We were good in patches," was the verdict of Leeds coach Brian McClennan. "We did some nice plays and there were periods when we defended well but we lost our grip before half-time when Saints scored some points."
