Powell puts Proteas on the back foot

Daren Powell took three wickets on the final session of day two in Port Elizabeth to put the West Indies firmly in control of the first Test with South Africa.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul's historic knock had given the tourists a good platform and Powell, backed up by Jerome Taylor, ripped through the Proteas' top order as they closed on 122 for five.

With three days to go the Windies will be hopeful of recording their first Test victory outside of the Caribbean since 2003 and their first against a major Test nation away from home since June 2000.

The Proteas innings got off to a poor start when Herschelle Gibbs fell for a duck with only one run on the board. Powell's fifth delivery of the innings caught Gibbs in two minds and he feathered a nick behind to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.

Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla scored quicker than five runs an over but the hosts were pegged back when Smith was trapped lbw plumb in front by Jerome Taylor for 28 from 31 balls.

In-form Jacques Kallis perished just eight runs later for a duck as the hosts were left reeling on 53 for three. A good length ball from Taylor moved slightly away from off stump and Kallis prodded it to Dwayne Bravo at third slip.

Amla was then brilliantly yorked by Powell for 29 to leave the Proteas in real trouble on 63 for four, still 345 behind the tourists first-innings total.

AB De Villiers and Ashwell Prince repaired some of the damage with a partnership of 43 but when the latter edged Powell to Runako Morton the hosts were five down and still 112 runs from the follow-on target.

Much now rests on the shoulders of De Villiers (22) and Mark Boucher (18) with only the tail to come, while Powell will be looking to add to his figures of three for 40 from 12 overs.
