Powerful Quins keep it tight

Harlequins served emphatic notice of their Guinness Premiership title credentials by sinking play-off rivals Bath 19-3 at the Recreation Ground.

The league leaders' 13th Premiership victory this season owed everything to a courageous defensive display. They absorbed all that Bath could throw at them after grinding out an interval lead through a penalty try when they exerted punishing scrum pressure.

Former Bath fly-half Chris Malone kicked a conversion and three penalties, while England international Danny Care added a drop-goal.

Meanwhile, Bristol were relegated after title-chasing London Irish confirmed the inevitable with a bonus-point 38-21 victory at the Madejski Stadium.

Tries from Scott Linklater and David Lemi, the first after an impressive spell, offered Bristol a glimmer of hope that quickly vanished, with Luke Eves grabbing a late consolation score.

England lock Kennedy and winger Adam Thompstone led the assault with two tries each while Steffon Armitage and Paul Hodgson also crossed in a result that has strengthened Irish's play-off claims.

Also on Saturday, wing Paul Diggin scored two tries and fly-half Stephen Myler kicked 16 points as Northampton dealt Gloucester's play-off hopes a serious blow with a 40-22 defeat.

England hooker Dylan Hartley and captain Bruce Reihana also touched down for Northampton. Myler landed four penalties and two conversions, with his replacement Barry Everitt contributing two late conversions.

And Worcester's 22-8 win over a poor Saracens side ultimately provided the final nail in the coffin of Bristol, putting them 13 points ahead of the West Country men with just a possible 10 available.

Leicester went back to the top of the Guinness Premiership with a bonus-point 37-31 win in a thriller against Sale.
