Progress made - Noble

Coach Brian Noble believes Wigan are heading in the right direction.

The Warriors missed out on a place in the engage Super League Grand Final after an 18-14 defeat by reigning champions Leeds at Headingley.

But Noble said: "We're improving. Great strides have been made in the last couple of seasons. The 18s and 21s are in Grand Finals - we just couldn't get a third team over the line."

"We had an absolute dig," he added. "We were good but we just couldn't quite find the composure to stay at the Leeds end. Had we stayed patient, the result might have been different.

"All 17 gave their all but, in the end, they just couldn't find the field position to score some points and basically we had too much defending to do."

The visitors battled to the end and were rewarded with a late tries by Harrison Hansen and Iafeta Paleaaesina but the final whistle signalled the end of the road for acting captain Trent Barrett, who will return home to Australia next month without a Grand Final appearance.

Defeat also brought to an end the Wigan careers of Liam Colbon and Mickey Higham, as well as former Leeds winger Mark Calderwood, who had a superb game in defence and drew the praise of his coach.

"Mark Calderwood epitomised our challenge in relation to the amount of try-saving tackles he made," said Noble.
