Proteas on top

An unbroken 83-run partnership between Ashwell Prince and Hashim Amla helped South Africa take charge on day two of the third Test against Australia, with the hosts reaching lunch in Cape Town at 148 for one.

Imraan Khan was the only wicket to fall, when he was out in the fourth over the morning for 20, but a solid second-wicket stand left the Proteas just 61 runs short of the tourists' first-innings 209.

Makeshift opener Prince was the mainstay for the hosts with a solid 70 not out, while Amla contributed an unbeaten 44 as Ricky Ponting's team were made to toil.

They began the day well enough, though, with Peter Siddle claiming the early breakthrough when he grasped onto a sharp return catch from debutant Khan.

Two balls later he almost got rid of Prince with a full-length delivery which struck the pads.

Umpire Steve Bucknor decided it was not out lbw and his call was justified by Billy Bowden upstairs after Ponting opted to refer the decision.

Prince brought up his ninth Test half-century in the 16th over of the day when he drove Mitchell Johnson through the covers for three to reach the mark in 76 balls.

The home side continued to steadily build, with Amla and Prince moving past the 50 partnership off 106 deliveries as South Africa went into lunch in a commanding position.
